The School of Economics at Sichuan University boasts a long history and rich heritage, tracing its origins back to the Department of Economics established in 1905. With over a century of development, it has been a place where renowned economists such as Peng Dixian, Zhang Yujiu, Jiang Xuemo, Hu Jichuang, Song Tao, Tao Dayong, Hu Daiguang, Zhou Chun, and Liu Shibai have taught or pursued their studies.
Throughout its long history, the School has adhered to the guidance of Marxist principles, perspectives, and methodologies. It has fully leveraged its strengths in theoretical economics, particularly political economy, continuously consolidating and expanding its reputation and influence in traditional and emerging research fields such as socialist economic theory, world economy, regional economics, macroeconomics, finance, and issues concerning agriculture, rural areas, and farmers.
The School comprises four teaching units: the Department of Economics, the Department of Business Administration and Finance, the Department of International Economics and Trade, and the Department of Finance; along with 14 research units, including the Research Center for Political Economy with Chinese Characteristics. It holds three first-level doctoral programs (Theoretical Economics, Applied Economics, and Statistics); three first-level master's programs (Theoretical Economics, Applied Economics, and Statistics); and two postdoctoral research stations (Theoretical Economics and Applied Economics). The school boasts one National Key Discipline in Political Economy and six National First-Class Undergraduate Programs.
