Economics and Management School (EMS) is now crowned as one of the largest school in Wuhan University. EMS has a long-standing tradition of excellence. With comprehensive disciplines and a galaxy of talents, the School embraces a wide range of social impacts and a strong competitiveness in the field of economics and management education in China.
EMS has 12 departments and institutes, 1 Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences (Ministry of Education) — the Climate Change and Energy Economics Study Center, 2 National and Regional Research Centers (Ministry of Education), and several academic research centers. The School hosts the journal Economic Review, one of the six core journals in economics funded by the Chinese National Social Science Foundation, and is one of the 13 national bases for training economic talents in China. The 30,000-square-metre office building provides modern conditions for teaching and research. The experimental teaching center is equipped with more than 1,200 sets of hardware equipment, 18 internationally used teaching software, over 30 domestic experimental teaching software, and more than 40 databases both in Chinese and English. In compliment to the University Library, the School library holds a collection of 160,000 books and 40,000 periodicals in economics and management.
EMS covers four first-level disciplines: Theoretical Economics, Applied Economics, Management Science & Engineering, and Business Administration. It is one of the very few schools in China authorized to offer degree programs in all first-level disciplines in economics and management. Two disciplines, Theoretical Economics and Finance, are granted premier National Key Subjects. Theoretical Economics was selected among the first batch of national top discipline building projects. In the latest China Discipline Ranking (CDR), EMS achieved “4A” ratings across its disciplines. The School has earned the “Triple Crown” of international accreditations (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA). In 2022, Economics & Business at WHU entered the top 1% of ESI globally. In 2025, WHU was ranked 74th in Economics and Business worldwide by U.S. News and 83rd in Economics and Econometrics by QS.
Faculty members have consistently published in top-tier journals. In Economics, their work appears in outlets such as Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Monetary Economics, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Economic Theory, Games and Economic Behavior, Theoretical Economics, Review of Financial Studies, and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. In Management, publications include Academy of Management Journal, Production and Operations Management, Journal of Accounting Research, Management Science, MIS Quarterly, and M&SOM-Manufacturing & Service Operations Management.
