Guizhou University of Finance and Economics and the Consortium for Western China Development Studies will co-organize the International Conference on Increasing Growth in Under-developed Regions and Construction of a Harmonious Society on July 24-26, 2007 in Guiyang, Guizhou, China. The conference is co-sponsored by Guizhou Provincial Government and The Chinese Economists Society. Other co-sponsors may include the Office for West China Development, the Office for Poverty Alleviation, UNDP, the World Bank, and GTZ.
 
The Consortium for Western China Development Studies was established in Chengdu on December 11, 2003 by a number of universities and research institutions located in Western China with the support of the Office for Western China Development in the State Council of China.  The Consortium is a non-governmental organization dedicated to fostering research cooperation among universities, research institutions, and government agencies to promote sustainable development in the western provinces. The goals of this conference are to share international experiences in poverty alleviation, enhance regional cooperation, and promote harmonious development of Western China.
 
The organizers expect 200-300 participants from universities, research institutions, government agencies and business sectors within and outside of China to attend this conference.  Many well-known economists from China, the U.S., Canada and other countries have been invited to participate. The conference is expected (1) to sign a Guiyang Statement on Increasing Growth in Under-developed Regions and Construction of a Harmonious Society; (2) to submit policy recommendations on under-developed regions to the central government; and (3) to publish a conference proceedings from selected papers presented at the conference. 
 
The coverage of the conference will include, but not be limited to, the following topics:

-          Enhancing Public Healthcare in Poor Areas
-          Women’s Role in Anti-poverty Programs
-          Assessment of Six years of West China Development
-          Poverty Alleviation through Migration in Western China
-          NGOs' Role in Poverty Alleviation
-          Research on the AIDS Epidemic and the use of Drugs in Poor Areas
