Dear CES Community,
It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Professor Belton M. Fleisher, a long-time member of the Chinese Economists Society (CES), a dedicated former Member of the CES Board of Directors, and former Editor and Executive Editor ofChina Economic Review. Professor Fleisher passed away at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, 2025 in Chicago. He was 90 years old.
Professor Fleisher received his Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University in 1961. He served on the faculty of the University of Chicago from 1961 to 1965 and then joined the faculty of The Ohio State University in 1965, where he later became Professor Emeritus of Economics. Over his distinguished career, he made profound contributions to labor economics, development economics, and the study of the Chinese economy. His scholarly leadership also helped strengthen and elevate the CES community. Notably, under his guidance, the China Economic Review developed into a flagship journal in the field of the Chinese economy.
We are currently working with colleagues and the Fleisher family on plans to honor Professor Fleisher’s life and legacy. We will share additional information as it becomes available.
With deepest condolences,
Kaiji Chen
CES President, On behalf of the Chinese Economists Society
