The CES 2009 Annual Conference on “Chinese Economic Growth in Global and Regional Context” was held on June 12 - 15 at Jinhua Hotel, Nanning, China.  With the full support of our local host and a large number of our CES active members, the Conference has marked another success in CES’ history.
Despite that the H1N1 has prevented one keynote speaker and some presenters from coming to Nanning at the last minute, we have about 250 registered delegates and more than 100 auditors from Guangxi University, a total of more than 350 people participated in the conference over the two days of meetings. Among whom, about 20 college deans in Chinese universities attended. Presenters came from 14 countries and regions in addition to mainland China.
The keynote speeches were delivered by Professors Sir. James Mirrlees (Nobel Laureate, Cambridge University and University of Hong Kong), Gregory Chow (Princeton University), and Chung Ming Kuan (Science Sinica, Taiwan) on topics of Risk Allocation, Environmental Policies, and Cross Straight Economy.
Six roundtable sessions have designated to current key issues in Chinese economy in financial policy, agriculture, private enterprises, social welfare, Pan North Gulf economy, and Taiwan and Southeast Asian economy.  25 top notch international economists, government officials and entrepreneurs led the interactive discussions with the highly engaged audience.  Among 130 papers presented at the conference, for the first time at CES conference, we had 17 posters.  The high quality posters (some from senior CES members) have attracted a large crowd of viewers.
The Vice Governor of Guangxi, Dr. Zhangliang Chen, gave a warm welcome address at the opening ceremony in which he highly appraised CES’ for this conference.  He also hosted a lunch with key CES officers and scholars. 9 past and current CES presidents have attended the conference.  A CES Presidents’ Forum was held to discuss the development issues of CES.
The opening and closing banquets were hosted by Nanning City government and Guangxi University, respectively.  A post conference tour to a major North Gulf city, Qinzhou, was hosted by the Vice Mayor of Qinzhou, and participated by over 80 conference attendants.  A 25-member delegation visited Guilin after the conference, and held a roundtable discussion at Guangxi Normal University.  The President and Vice President of GNU hosted the lunch reception and the discussion.
We greatly appreciate our local host, Guangxi University; especially the Business School.  The logistic service was outstanding.  The conference was impossible without the hardworking of dozens of student volunteers, faculty and staff members of GXU.  Most of all, the success of the conference is contributed by each of the conference participants and CES members working behind the scene.
