International Conference on “Challenges Facing Chinese Agriculture and the West Development Strategy”
Yangling, Shaanxi  China
July 6-7 2006

Organized by
The Northwest A&F University
The Chinese Economists Society (CES)

The Chinese agriculture is facing considerable challenges in terms of slow income growth, lack of technology advances, growing population-land pressure, environmental problems, competition from foreign farm imports and so on. Meanwhile, China's sluggish domestic demand, which hurts the national economy, owes much to the enlarging rural-urban gap and income inequality in general.

To discuss these challenges and policy implications, the College of Economics & Management (CEM) of the Northwest A&F University and CES wish to bring foreign scholars and Chinese economists to Yangling (one hour drive from Xian) for a relaxed and constructive conference. Any topic relevant to China's rural development is welcome. Some of the conceived topics are: poverty-inequality-growth, education-health-infrastructure, rural-urban migration, GMO, market and trade, pesticide residuals, TVEs, crop insurance, and water and land-related issues.

Participants whose papers are accepted for presentation will be provided with partial funding. Specifically, the local host will cover domestic (within China) travel, food and accommodation during the conference, and one-day tour in Xian.
