The CES-Chow Short-Term Teaching Program Application Procedures for Summer 2009
I. The Program
With the support from the Gregory and Paula Chow Foundation, the CES plans to award six (6) qualified applicants to teach in China in the summer of 2009. The teaching stipend will be $2,500 for each awardee in this academic year.
II. Application for the CES-Chow Teaching Fellowship
1. Eligibility of Applicants
(1) The applicant must be the CES member.
(2) The applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree or have passed the Ph.D. qualification examinations, in economics or management, awarded or offered by a university in North America;
(3) The awardees of the teaching grant agrees to submit to the CES Teaching Committee a report within 2 weeks after the completion of their teaching and a summary of the teaching evaluations.
2. Application Procedure
(1) The applicant is responsible for finding a host university in China.
(2) A complete application for the teaching should include the following:
a. A letter of application, including the course title, the teaching schedule including the number of contact hours, and the name of the host institute where you would like to teach the proposed course; whether the applicant has applied before and whether the application was successful.
b. A syllabus that includes the content of the course, textbook(s), references, the arrangement of examinations, and the schedule of the lectures. A brief statement about applications to the Chinese economy is encouraged.
c. A copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae (2-3 pages).
d. A copy of the letter of invitation from the host institute, signed by a department head or a dean at your host institute.
(3) The initial application (including a, b, and c above) should be sent to Professor Shaomin Huang, Coordinator of the Chow Teaching Program of the CES Board. Applications will be accepted until May 1 if the six positions are not yet filled; however, those received before February 1 will be given priority and acted on early. 3. Selection of Awardees
(1) A CES teaching committee will review all applications, select awardees, and notify all applicants of its decisions.
(2) The selection of awardees of the teaching grants will be based on the following considerations:
a. Applicant’s knowledge of the subject and teaching experience;
b. Broad participation by Chinese universities;
c. Broad participation by scholars;
d. The need of economics and management education in China.
4. Financial Compensation
(1) The instructor of the teaching program will be compensated by the CES with a lump-sum stipend of $2,500. The instructor will receive the compensation after the completion of his or her teaching in China, and after the committee has received the instructor’s final report.
(2) The instructor may obtain further compensation from the host institute for the expenses in China. The CES will not be responsible for these arrangements.
(3) If the instructor has obtained financial support from other sources for the same task (except the compensation for living expenses from the host institute), the CES will withdraw or reduce its financial support. The awardees should notify CES of such financial compensations as soon as he or she has accepted them. Applying for funding from other sources, however, will not affect the selection of the awardees. The CES is trying to make limited resources available to more members and others who wish to teach in China.
